Isaak Bergen, minister and farmer, was born to Rev. Abraham and Margarethe (nee Bergen) Bergen on June 4, 1854 in the Bergthal Colony, Southern Russia. He was the ninth of 14 children, three of his siblings died as infants. Rev. Abraham Bergen (1842-1916) and Deacon Heinrich Bergen (1853-1926) were two of his brothers. Bergen was baptized on May 20, 1874 and married Helena Reimer the following year. Their marriage produced 13 children. Sadly five of these died as children. Bergen and his family emigrated to Canada in 1875. In June of that year they settled on the East Reserve in Manitoba but soon moved to the West Reserve where they homesteaded in Lichtfeld, West of Altona. Bergen was ordained to the ministry in 1885 by Aeltester Johann Funk. Isaak Bergen served in the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church until his death on August 18, 1922.
This fonds contains 8 sermons which were written for special services including Christmas, Easter, and New Years. Most of these sermons also include a record of where and when they were preached between 1886 an 1922.
